Reaction with water

Reacts slowly with cold water to produce magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen

Reaction with steam

Reacts vigorously with steam to produce magnesium oxide and hydrogen.

Magnesium burns with a bright white flame and produces a white powder of magnesium oxide

Magnesium oxide is an ionic solid; MP 2900oC

It is only slightly soluble, it is a basic oxide.
